A sweet victory

Inserted into the starting lineup to begin the second half last night against Kearsarge, Merrimack Valley junior Nick Lavoie delivered eight crucial points in the fourth quarter. But Lavoie's biggest contribution might have been these two sweet words: ice cream.

The Pride has struggled in close games all season and poor free throw shooting has been a major part of the problem. So when MV's Kevin Cressy went to the line last night with 20.5 seconds left and a chance to ice the game for the Pride, Lavoie sidled up to Cressy with this advice.

"Nick came up to me and said, 'Think ice cream, think ice cream,' " said Cressy, who finished with a game-high 14 points and nine rebounds. "That's what he was telling me, so I was like, all right, I'll think ice cream and I hit 'em."

Those free throws capped a game-closing 10-3 run for the Pride (6-6), which overcame a 10-point second-half deficit for a 44-39 win over the visiting Cougars (6-6). The victory was critical for MV after it had lost four of its last five and five of its last seven.

Circling the Square, Feb. 4

Here it is, Feb. 4 and people are already mailing us items about events that are happening in April and May. In fact, there’s already lots of planning around high school graduations and a couple of the Family Festival Board members are talking about some of the new and exciting changes these creative and hard-working folks are thinking about to make these two weeks better and better.

But, I can’t stand it because it seems like I just turn around and another year has flown by. My mother was right. She used to say when you’re a child, time goes by slowly but when you’re older, it passes by much too quickly. There is a plus side, though, at least with warmer weather coming, it will be fun to see more people out and at some of these good events that will be coming up.

Every time I would speak to my friends who own a Toyota Prius and hear how much they love it and how economical it is, I would feel I was missing the boat; I, too, should have one. In fact, Toyota has always had such a good reputation buying one seemed like a no-brainer. That is, until now. I really feel sorry for the company and for those people who have the brake problem. Let’s hope Toyota is able to fix the cars quickly so that everyone will be safe. I understand all that’s needed is a steel shim that fills the space under the pedal so it won’t stick. I guess this is what could be called putting the “metal to the pedal.”
