Yadav's brother Pappu was afflicted by a similar condition in 2008. He visited a doctor at Banaras Hindu University who gave him no medicines but offered a rather simple solution: Give up using water. Over thousands of years, arsenic has been washing down from the Himalayas with the Ganga water as sediment. In the plains, this arsenic has been leaching into the ground. It remained within permissible limits and did no harm till around the 1970s when, concerned over deaths in the Gangetic belt caused mainly by the unhygienic pattern of water consumption and poor sanitary conditions, the government and Unicef sank millions of tubewells.

Study: Deep wells can be safe from arsenic

NEW YORK, Oct. 11 (UPI) -- Natural processes can limit the leaching of arsenic into drinking water taken from deep wells, U.S. researchers say.

Arsenic that leaches naturally from sediments can be a threat in shallow wells, so wells are often dug 500 feet down or more to reach uncontaminated water, but there have been fears that once deep water is pumped out arsenic might filter down and contaminate the wells, researchers said.

However, a study at Columbia University in New York has shown that deep sediments can grab the arsenic and take it out of circulation, keeping water from such deep wells safe, a university release reported Monday.

Columbia researchers Kathleen Radloff and her colleagues injected arsenic-rich water into a deep aquifer in Bangladesh then monitored arsenic levels over nine days.

The level of arsenic fell by 70 percent after 24 hours, they found, and continued to decline over the monitoring period.

They attributed this to the arsenic sticking to the surfaces of deep sediment particles, in a process called adsorption.
