Employees of Garland Commercial Industries of Freeland who will lose their jobs in July are eligible for additional unemployment compensation benefits from the U.S. Department of Labor's Trade Adjustment Assistance program.
The assistance program provides aid to workers who lose their jobs, or whose hours of work and wages are significantly reduced, as a result of increased imports.
The U.S. Department of Labor announced Friday that 4,400 employees of 15 companies nationwide, including Garland, Whirlpool Corp. of Evansville, Ind., and Chrysler Group of Detroit, Mich., have been approved for the assistance benefits.
Officials of Garland announced in November that operations will cease at the Freeland manufacturing facility July 1, leaving about 200 employees jobless. Company Vice President and General Manager Peter McFarland said consolidation and the economy played a role in the decision to close the local plant.
Garland has been manufacturing stoves and cooking equipment in Freeland since 1974.
