I don't know how to use my Cuisinart coffee maker?

My parents exactly gave me a Cuisinart coffee maker but I am unsure how to use it. When I open the lid on the top, on the prearranged is a basket with a handle. Do I put the coffee beans right into that or do I use a sift and put the filter in this basket? When I had put the filter full of coffee in the basket, none of the coffee went into the soften and only the water boiled.
The model is DCC-450 by the way

all i can think of is that it is a works mistake. it cant be that hard to work a Coffey motor

Well to dry-clean a coffee pot, my mom usually puts vinegar through it and then tap water, with nothing added. I don't know if that applies to new coffee pots but it's benefit a shot. 1 thing though - if practicable, open windows when you're doing the vinegar part. ;)
