SELF-SERVE DESSERT
31.12.69
Veteran Eugene restaurateurs Jim and Phil West have moved into a new food group — self-serve frozen yogurt.
The brothers — whose company Westraunt Concepts includes Mucho Gusto and Dickie Jo’s Burgers — have converted the former Mucho Gusto at 1079-B Valley River Way into a self-serve frozen yogurt shop, YO MY MY Frozen U-Gurt.
Self-serve frozen yogurt is one of the hot trends in the food industry, Jim West said. Industry groups like the National Association of Convenience Stores report that sales of frozen yogurt have climbed in recent years, with self-serve options increasing of late across the country, including at national chains like Cold Stone Creamery.
Driving the trend is the combination of consumer demand for more healthful — lower fat, lower calorie — desserts and the lure of giving people more control over their own food, West said. “It’s all about choice ... and family entertainment,” he said.

New Frozen Yogurt Shop Opens in Maple Grove
31.12.69
Inside Tutti Frutti on Main Street Maple Grove, kids are creating their own treat.
With bowls in hand, they bounce from machine to machine, swirling different kinds of sweetly named yogurt into their dish. Once they’ve combined a little “strawberry field” and “death by chocolate” they move on to the toppings where a full buffet of fruit, crunched cookies and nuts are available for the choosing.
“Tutti Frutti is a self-serve yogurt bar,” Tutti Frutti owner Kelly Gaspar said. “There really isn’t anything like it in Minnesota.”
Gaspar opened her shop, right across from Panera Bread, three weeks ago. She hasn’t done any advertising and already has a steady stream of customers.
“We’ve come here four times,” customer Carolyn Highfield said. “My friends are giving me a hard time because I rave about this place so much, but I can’t help it. I love it.”
Highfield has brought her husband, her three children, and two of the kid’s friends for yogurt this time around.
