Road Test: 2012 Range Rover Evoque
01.01.70
Consider the source of motivation. Where Range Rovers have long embraced thirsty V8s, the Evoque uses a direct-injected turbocharged four-cylinder engine. It manages to wring 240 horsepower and 251 pound-feet of torque out of just two litres. It is a smooth operator that has the desired effect — the Evoque canters to 100 kilometres an hour in 7.6 seconds and delivers a speedy 80-to-120-km/h passing time of six seconds. This sort of performance usually demands at least six cylinders. My lone beef is with the rather peaky nature of the power delivery. Initially, the engine feels a tad lazy, then, all of a sudden, it catches fire. It’s not turbo lag; it’s the way the throttle is calibrated.
It also delivers much better fuel economy numbers than Range Rovers of old. The Evoque delivers a posted highway rating of 7.1 litres per 100 kilometres and a city figure of 10.7 L/100 km. Mind you, if you are in the habit of flexing the gas pedal, the engine does get thirsty — my test average of 12.4 L/100 km confirms that.
