Million dollar cookie?
04.02.10
In her own home, good cooking is a family tradition. Helen taught her daughter, Azle resident Jodi Thompson, her secrets to success. In 2008, armed with that knowledge, Thompson added a few tricks of her own to win first place at the Texas State Fair while her mom took second.
Thompson is carrying on the family tradition by teaching her own kids, Andrew and Emily. They also won cooking competitions at the 2008 State Fair.
But Helen is still the cooking matriarch. Since the 1970’s her recipes have placed in dozens of state fair competitions and numerous other cook-offs. One win came with a $1,000 cash prize and a “little thumbnail photo on the cover of Salad Master Magazine,” Fields said.
Fields says the size of the prize isn’t as important as just being a winner.
“I just love winning,” she said. “But a million big ones isn’t pocket change.”
On April 12, if Fields wins the grand championship, the cash comes with a GE Profile induction free-standing

Bake-Off ingredients go beyond Doughboy
27.01.10
It won't be long until 100 home cooks meet in Orlando, Fla., to
compete in the 44th Pillsbury Bake-Off.
Contestants will work at mini-kitchens set up side-by-side on
the competition floor. News media and other spectators will watch
as the amateur cooks prepare everything from appetizers to desserts
at these well-stocked cooking stations.
All the ingredients needed to prepare their recipes will be
assembled, including "eligible products" required by contest rules.
Finalists have to use two or more of these supermarket staples,
with at least one of the ingredients from the "primary list" and a
second from either the primary or "secondary list."
If you thought the Pillsbury Bake-Off was only a Doughboy thing,
take a look at the players in the grand competition for home
cooks:
The primary list includes Pillsbury Refrigerated Crescent Dinner
Rolls; Classic Pizza Crust; Cookie Dough and Ready to Bake!
Cookies; Grands! and Golden Layers Biscuits; Cinnamon Rolls;
Breadsticks; Crusty French Loaf; and Pie Crusts; Pillsbury Brownie
Mixes; and Pillsbury BEST Flour.
