Calasan's Indonesian cuisine easy on the wallet
17.10.11
When it comes to international food, the offerings available in
these United States are off-kilter; our restaurant scene is not
truly representative of the world. Population-wise, France and
Italy rank pretty low on the list (21st and 23rd, respectively) but
their food is omnipresent. Greece ranks a measly 76th, but their
gyros are just a phone call away at any time. This theory of mine
presumes, of course, a level playing field in which sheer numbers
of bodies translate into proportional culinary accomplishment.
Obviously, other factors are at play. Scandinavian and other
cold-weather countries have shorter growing seasons and
less-abundant native ingredients to play with than Mediterranean or
Equatorial ones do. Technological leaps like the wok, the fondue
pot or the George Foreman grill can give a cuisine a leg up on its
competition.
But none of this explains why Indonesia, the fourth most
populous nation in the world and home to an abundance of spices,
was until recently represented by a single restaurant in the
greater Madison area. That number was doubled with the opening of
Calasan, which advertises its fare as “Indonesian Fast Food” and
serves lunches in a more casual atmosphere and at a lower price
point than its fancier counterpart, Bandung.

Thinking Chicken Tonight? Think Drew Gooden!
13.10.11
Man, it has been a long week. I need to go out and grab some food and give my George Foreman grill a break. I just have this sudden hankering for chicken wings. That would really hit the spot right now.
You know what makes good chicken wings? Nine-year NBA pros from Kansas who are in the second year of a five-year, $32 million deal and averaging 11.9 points per game and 7.8 rebounds per game for his career. That is who.
And if you are like me and live in Orlando, Drew Gooden's poultry magnificence is coming to a fast food restaurant near you.
OK, so Drew Gooden is not actually going to be making the chicken (I am slightly disappointed by this). But Gooden is helping Wingstop, a Texas-based fast food chain, open up four stores in Central Florida , according to Anjali Fluker of the Orlando Business Journal. Gooden, who played two seasons with the Magic, said he hopes the chain will grow to be as big as Five Guys and Jimmy John's in the Orlando area.
