How can I tell if I have an inline water filter on the water main?
I got some outstanding advice about finding out what's causing this repugnant odor from incoming water into my house....now I'm demanding to figure out if there's an inline water filter somewhere...to check to see if filter's dirty. It's my first occasion buying a house and I didn't identify enough about asking the right kinds of questions re this. Lift??
A big filter on your water most important will look a bit like a giant go on a binge cup in your house's main water supply. If you have a basement, it'll be down there. If a crawlspace, in all probability there or somewhere close to the access hatch for ease in changing the filter; otherwise it'll be in a closet somewhere. Find where the water comes into the house and start tracing; if you have a whole-clan filter it'll be on that line somewhere after the garden hose outfitting leaves the line, but before anything else does.
A consistent filter won't reduce odors. An activated-carbon filter will.
But before you set on fire up a lot of time looking for that and maybe tearing out the knees of your pants crawling under the crib, do this: run the water for a couple of minutes. If the house has been sitting empty for several months waiting for a consumer, the water in the pipes can go stale and smell bad.
