Harbour Island neighbors meet with Secret Service about 2012 Convention security

TAMPA - There are only two ways to get to Harbour Island by car and both are extremely close to the two biggest venues for the Tampa’s 2012 Republican National Convention.
"Probably our primary concern is just access on and off the island," said Steve Wigh, President of the Harbour Island Community and Services Association.
Harbour Island's east gate opens near Channelside next to the St. Pete Times Forum. The west gate is steps away from Tampa's Convention Center, where 15,000 journalists will work. If either is shut down when a security perimeter is set, it'll no doubt cause four days of inconvenience for the 3,500 people who live on Harbour Island.
"That does not include the folks who work on the island in the various commercial office buildings. Of course, we have the hotel here and there's a lot of different activities that we have so there's a lot of folks coming and going off the island," said Wigh.
Wigh is one of nearly 30 homeowner’s association representatives meeting with United States Secret Service to express neighbors’ concerns. Some neighbors say traffic is just a start.

Staten Island Academy's smothering full-court pressure produced 12 first-quarter turnovers and the Tigers were able to capitalize on the offensive end as they cruised to a 59-48 ACIS victory over visiting Friends Seminary on Friday.
Senior Bethany Claps led the way with 23 points and 10 rebounds and Erin Gibbons chipped in with 11 points for the Tigers, who improved to 2-0 in league play (3-1 overall).
SIA trailed 3-2 in the opening minutes, but the Dongan Hills school reeled off the next 12 points in a 3:02 span to take control of the game. In fact, after Gibbons and Claps both converted offensive rebounds into baskets, the Tigers' press produced several turnovers that were turned into easy baskets.
Samantha Avis, Claps and Sam Spadaro each scored off the break via turnovers before Gibbons capped the burst with a foul-line jumper.
Friends' Dana Barger (16 points) broke the spell with a jumper, but Avis sandwiched a Claps layup with a 3-pointer and another bucket off a miscue to give the Tigers a commanding 21-5 lead. SIA led 23-8 at the end of the period and 41-13 at intermission.
