Anyone know where to recycle an old microwave oven?
01.01.70
I'm the proud owner of two microwave ovens, which is one more than I want. But I can't seem to toss the old one in a Dumpster in my alley.
I bought a microwave oven Sunday because my 15-year-old model conked out. Well, the old one still works great. Except I don't like that it turns on automatically whenever I open the door.
I thought I could drop it off at a well-known electronics chain store that is gaining some fame for its recycling program. But it doesn't take microwave ovens.
I called a local recycling company, and I was told that it, too, doesn't take microwave ovens, but it might start doing so in the spring. Hmmm, March, April, May. Sort of a long ways off to store an old microwave oven.
I even called Habitat for Humanity, thinking they might have a fix-it guy who could make the microwave oven new again. But they don't take appliances unless they're in tip-top shape. And who can blame them?
So if anyone knows where to recycle a microwave oven, I'm all ears. Or if you're interested in repairing this one -- it works great, maybe too great -- let me know as well.

Stay Safe in the Kitchen this Holiday Season
01.01.70
Stay in the kitchen while you are frying, grilling, or broiling food. If you leave the kitchen for even a short period of time, turn off the stove.
Check the oven regularly when you are baking, roasting or broiing food. Remain at home while food is cooking and use a timer as a reminder that you're cooking.
Stay alert! Don't start cooking if you're sleepy, have been drinking or have taken medicine that makes you drowsy.
Keep anything flammable away from the stovetop--potholders, oven mitts, paper or plastic bags, food packaging, towels, or curtains, even wooden utensils.
Keep clean : stovetop, burners and oven.
Pay attention to clothing while cooking--wear short, close-fitting or tightly-rolled sleeves. Loose clothing can dangle and catch fire if it comes in contact with a gas flame or electric burner.
Never use an extension cord
