The Rise And Fall Of Momentum Stock Diamond Foods

Diamond Foods, the owner of Pop Secret popcorn and Kettle brand potato chips, has been a momentum-darling this year, as a combination of acquisitions and organic growth fueled earnings and share price increases.

In April, it looked to do that again when it announced its $2.35 billion purchase agreement for Pringles from Proctor & Gamble. The combined company would double its top line number, after jumping 42% to $965 million the year before. But that all appears in doubt today, when Diamond Foods failed to meet quarterly filing deadlines with the Securities and Exchange Commission, sending shares down 20%.

The delay follows an investigation of its supplier payment practices, which has consumed the company and cost it its momentum stature within the investing community.

Diamond Foods first came under scrutiny over mysterious payments for walnuts in September, which suppliers and analysts questioned. In a report this morning by Hannah Karp of the Wall Street Journal , at least three growers said they received sizable checks for future deliveries, even though they had no plans on delivering crops to Diamond Foods.

Brazil: Seeing the Kettle for the Popcorn, Ethanol Tariffs a Two ...

Expos surfaced earlier this week that the Brazilian Sugarcane Trade Society (UNICA) has been working behind the scenes in Brasilia, the outback’s top-hole, to leavings the 20% allusion price-list Brazil imposes on ethanol.  The permanence of an ethanol excise in Brazil is surprising rumour, signally coming from a homeland who’s President has offered up his tolerable pay out of gripes about US’ ethanol substance tariffs.

It seems that UNICA avidly defends emancipate m for renewable fuels.  The Group is no doubt bullish on sugar ethanol’s indwelling monetary and environmental advantages over corn ethanol and wants to take the gloves off to go toe to toe with corn ethanol to battle for US, Brazilian, and far-reaching markets.  But most recently, UNICA asserted a more watered-down way of thinking and defended its call as a compulsory match to disc a rise above-mutual shortfall in sugarcane setting, which prompted the Brazilian regulation to gash ethanol blending mandates from 25% to 20%.

Geoff Styles, column for the Energy Collective , offers some engaging insights about Brazil’s ethanol weight impost.  He notes that UNICA’s call for the elimination of ethanol tariffs shows two things: first, that Brazil’s rare dependence on biofuels creates an new humanitarian of verve-insurance confidence on crop yields rather than geopolitics, and aid, Brazil’s noteworthy vivacity self-assurance is more a role of native oil construction, not ethanol policies.

The toll fray between the US and Brazil has been amusing to guard, but things could get much more theatrical in due term.
