Oui! Go French in the kitchen

By Sean Mallen
Renovations are like rabbits: they breed and multiply. So it was with us when we built a large addition to our Toronto house.
Even as the final paint was drying on our new family room, it was clear that this reno was about to give birth to another. Our 10-year-old kitchen suddenly looked drab and dated. We had more or less designed it on our own and we patently did not know what we were doing.
We thought long and hard before taking a deep breath and making the commitment — only to get the wind knocked out of us.
Much to my surprise, I was offered the job of a lifetime — London-based correspondent for Global News.
To quote Shakespeare: “The whirligig of time brings his revenges.”
After much consideration, negotiation and perspiration I took the job. My wife and daughter would stay in Toronto and decide later whether to join me.
Off I jetted to the U.K., in time to cover the Royal wedding, leaving Isabella to pursue a busy freelance career, while also functioning as a single mother to a charming but highly opinionated six-year-old — and overseer of a major kitchen renovation.
