Guest Editorial: Power failure and the reality for many
01.01.70
Today is Nov. 2, and I just spent the better part of the morning cleaning out my refrigerator and freezer, including an upright in the basement. It broke my heart to have to throw out so much spoiled food. We have not had power since 2 p.m. Saturday due to the freak snowstorm. My house is 46 degrees! We spent two nights at home after the power went out and then gave up. We are fortunate to have a friend take in two frozen guests. We have remained there since.
As we sat freezing in our home, I began to think of the many clients who come to the Human Needs Food Pantry each week. Many of them have had their electricity turned off because they had to make the choice between eating, paying rent and paying the gas and electric bill. We lost power because of the storm and will get it back soon (at least that is what PSE&G keeps telling me). They lost power because of the inability to pay their bill.
For the first time, I really began to understand the reality of their plight. We are lucky; we have friends to take us in. In most cases our clients have to depend on themselves. Many have been without power for months. They live in a constant state of anxiety and uncertainty. I now have a better understanding of what that is like.
