WEST BEND, Wis. -- He was shut out of the nominations for Wednesday night's Country Music Association awards, but West Bend has come to learn the rewards for Toby Keith happen off stage.
WISN 12 News' Portia Young found out how country music's bad boy helped a WWII veteran make the trip back to the place where it all began.
WWII veteran Jerry Jerome was in charge of the supply room at the Schofield Barracks in December 1941.
"I opened up the doors, the front doors, to look up, and the sky was filled with Japanese planes," Jerome said.
He was 18 miles from the heavy bombing at Pearl Harbor but still felt the pressure from the blows.
The 25th Infantry Army sergeant grabbed his gun and "Got busy."
"There was a 5-inch anti-aircraft shell. It came down through our barracks. Fortunately, it didn't go off, or I wouldn't be here today," Jerome said.
At 90 years old, Jerome is one of two Pearl Harbor veterans still living in Washington

West Bend residents caught off guard by first snowfall of the season
01.01.70
WEST BEND- No one seemed ready for the first snowfall of the season.
It sure looked like a winter wonderland in West Bend and it's not officially winter.
Colten Schmitt was surprised his car was covered with snow after working all day in rainy Milwaukee.
"All of a sudden we started seeing snow on the grass," said Schmitt. "It's like a blizzard up here."
The wind was howling, the snow was blowing and street signs were covered. But it wasn't hard to see the special of the month sign outside the Boucher dealership.
It was good timing to sell a big truck with a plow and salter. "You could use it this time of year for plowing and salting," said salesman Steve Andreasen, and "you can always get a good deal here."
But not everyone thinks snow this early in November is a good deal. "I'm not ready for it," said Chad Schultz
His daughters Chloe and Emma weren't ready either. They tried to stay warm while dad stayed optimistic.
