PS: Just now asked my sister and she suggested something that sounded enchanting - sea salt or kosher salt layered onto glue (it looks well-intentioned of like snow crystals) then covered in lacquer. The pepper one we couldn't contrive of anything except perhaps whole peppercorns (different colors)
