Autumn is rippling through the Finger Lakes, stirring up longings for fiery foliage and comfort food. A drive to Pumpkin Hill Bistro in Aurora fills the bill on both counts, with extra helpings of creativity and genuine hospitality.

Pumpkin Hill occupies an1820s white farmhouse with a view like a long drink of Cayuga Lake. The bistro’s cozy decor blends the historic and eclectic into a charming variety of seating options.

In summer, no doubt, the porch and garden tables are divine. But on our recent visit the seasons were shifting and we happily stepped inside where tiny white lights and rustic grapevines embraced the wooden ceiling beams.

“Would you like to sit in the comfy chairs?” The hostess nodded toward two upholstered wing chairs at a small table near the open kitchen. You bet we’d like the comfy chairs — and the birds-eye view. In many top restaurants you pay a princely sum to sit at the “chef’s table” and watch what’s cooking.

Hampton Falls butcher shop expands, opens dining room

Luby is referring to the portion of the shop that he and his wife, Jen, have transformed into a cozy, classy dining area that can seat up to 25 people.

A leather couch tucked in the corner is surrounded by chairs and tables of varying heights. The latter are covered with white linens, set with gold charger plates and crisp black napkins tucked into glass stemware.

With its stunning black-and-red color scheme, soft lighting, fresh herb bouquets and nautical décor, the spot "is very unique and very comfortable," said Luby.

But it's what comes fresh from the case and the kitchen that seems to generate the most excitement for the Lubys and their customers.

Every week, from 5 to 9:30 p.m. Thursday through Saturday, the shop offers a "2 for $20" dinner menu that features an assortment of grilled marinated meats, pasta and fresh seafood served with sides that include seasonal vegetables, baked potatoes or rice pilaf.
