Jeanne's Hazlenut Chocolate Cake – a happy kitchen accident

. It’s not unusual to talk to her in the afternoon and by the following morning she’s whipped up a stew, loaves of banana bread and knit a sweater for herself and a hat and scarf set for one of her grand kids – seriously.

So when she called me last week to say she’d just picked up her ribbons from the Puyallup Fair, I wasn’t surprised. “I entered my chocolate hazlenut cake and won two ribbons!” she proudly told me. The story of her cake starts out as one of those “uh-oh” accident moments we’ve all had in cooking when you can’t find or don’t have on hand what you need. “I wanted to do a chocolate hazlenut cake, but I couldn’t find hazelnuts,” she said, “so I bought those Ritter hazelnut bars and chopped them in the food processor.  It really made a difference in how the cake turned out in taste, moistness and appearance. Funny, huh?” Well yes, but what a great accident! The family loved it, she took it to a couple of potlucks and everyone loved it, so she decided to enter it into the Fair.
