Graves told his story of paralysis on the TedMed stage. He told us from his wheelchair how in 2003 he had been running around the world, traveling nonstop to create his incredible designs, when he got a sinus cold he just could not get rid of. It’s still not clear what the infection was, but talk about turning lemons into lemonade …
The premise was a good one, with the promise of interesting characters and a couple of mysteries. Unfortunately, it just didn't deliver for me.
Connie Flood - teacher, journalist, independent woman - had the most compelling story overall. Her niece Anne, who acted as the book's narrator, didn't capture my imagination at all. Sadly, the only time I felt anything for her was when she betrayed her beloved aunt. Her visit to Connie when she confessed what she was thinking of doing was awkward and uncomfortable.
As for creepy Parley Burns and the seemingly irresistible Michael Graves, I found their behaviour confusing. I had compassion for the younger Michael, but wasn't impressed by the older one. The mysteries that seemed to follow Parley were interesting, but they were left open-ended. I wanted some closure there if nowhere else, but I didn't get it.
On the upside, I found this an easy book to get into and to get through. Hay has a way with description that pulls the reader into a scene. I just wish I had felt more for her characters.
