Wine: Red wine blends mix well with hearty autumn fare
Gene: While hybrid cars have become the buzz of the automotive industry over the last few years, a similar trend has been trickling into the world of wine. Hybrid wines, or blends, are popping up by the dozens in both red and white varietals, pushing the boundaries of what to expect beneath the cork.
While one may not enjoy a typically dry Cabernet Sauvignon, a simple blend of 70 percent Cabernet and 30 percent Merlot could be just the flavor that your taste buds have been searching for.
A few of my favorites to hit the rack in the last year are Adler Fels Winery's "Kitchen Sink Red," Cline's "Cashmere" and Sokol Blosser's "Meditrina."
"Kitchen Sink Red" takes its namesake seriously, blending together nearly everything but the actual kitchen sink. A blend of Zinfandel, Merlot, Cabernet and Petite Syrah, this wine is a full-bodied, fruit-forward wine that is both ripe and lush. Cassis, plum and crushed berry aromas are layered with a hint of black pepper.
