J Sainsbury plc : We are what we waste
01.01.70
Consumers and waste - not the sexiest subject. In fact one
that is difficult to do much with, and difficult to sell -
both internally or externally.
Well, we've been partnering with WRAP (Waste Resources
Action Programme) for a number of years now supporting
their Love Food
Hate Waste campaign. A few years ago we ran a campaign
called Love Your Leftovers and followed this up with some
in-store customer engagement by giving away plastic storage
containers.
This time round we have commissioned some interesting
research to understand UK shopping and food waste habits by
creating new consumer typologies. The results are
fascinating. Sampling over 2,000 people we found that the
majority (25%) were "Food Phobics" - people who
needlessly throw away food that is approaching the best
before date without even checking. Also guilty were
"Hungry Hoarders" - shoppers that stock up on
goods impulsively but then don't have the time to eat
them, and "Ditzy Diarists" - who go shopping,
forgetting that they are out most of the week. Combined
they accounted for 20%.

Lost Power? Here's What Food to Save and What to Throw Out
01.01.70
If you are one of the East Haddam or Haddam residents whose home lost power during Saturday's freak snow storm and it hadn't returned in 48 hours, the food in your refrigerator and freezer may have been spoiled.
Food safety experts note that when the refrigerator's temperature climbs above 41 degrees Fahrenheit, the bacteria that cause food-borne illnesses can grow and quickly multiply.
Food in the fridge typically spoils faster than food in the freezer. According to the Food and Safety Inspection Department of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, after power has been lost, food in a refrigerator remains safe for only about four to six hours — if the refrigerator has remained unopened .
As for freezers, which should be set at zero degrees Fahrenheit, a full freezer will hold its temperature for about 48 hours, but only 24 hours if a freezer is half full. If power is going to be out for a long time, get block ice or dry ice to keep your refrigerator or freezer as cold as possible.
