Residents are told to 'shop' road salt thieves
31.12.69
Last winter, when road salt was in short supply and it was difficult for the council teams to reach and refill the bins, Amey Public Services made additional supplies available at the gates of its Bargeddie depot.
The aim was to make salt available to the public and allow people take away small quantities in their own containers.
Mr Smart said: “People were turning up with vans and trailers to take as much as they could.
“We know a number of people were being community minded and were collecting on behalf of neighbours, and for that we applaud them.
“Others were undoubtedly taking it to use to treat their own yards, business premises or in the worst cases, sell it on ... and that is theft.
“One of the roads service’s senior managers was offered bags of road salt for £1 by youths selling round the doors.
“It may seem funny at first, but if you are the one who slips, falls and suffers injury as a result of there being no salt available to help clear paths it won’t be a laughing matter.”
