Horse a Hard Keeper - Weight Building Supplements?
Hey!
I have an darned hard keeper (13 yr old OTTB) who moral will not gain weight. He is regularly dewormed, his teeth are up to dated, the vet says there is no medical reason he is not gaining preponderancy and he is on quality (tested) grass and meadow-land. He is worked 4-5 days a week. 3 days dressage, 1 day hippodrome and 1-2 days conditioning (4min patrol, 3min trot, 2 min canter X 4). He has of course no issue with energy levels and it non-specifically takes him over an hour to start slowing down in his exertion) and returns to normal vitals in approx. 5-6 minutes. He comes up at a low 4 on the cadaver condition scale though. 5-6 ribs are perceptible and he has no crease down his spine. This bothers me and I am constantly being told that my horse is too undernourished and I don’t care for him. I think he could use some more weight to put some fat over his ribs and boost fill out his hind quarters a bit. He is currently on 8lbs of Seminole Wellness Higher- ranking Mix (10% fat/12% protein) (been on this for 6 months) and 1lbPurina Mills Add to 32% (5% fat/32% protein) (been on this for 4 months) and 1 quart (honourable under a pound dry) beet pulp. I long for to add a supplement to help him put some fat on. After talking to a nutritionist, several trainers and delve into I have narrowed what I think would work for him to these:
Omega Horseshine (flax motive based) (1cup)

I penetrate what you are going through. Try giving him a grain with more fat. Purina Ultium has 12% fat. My trainer has had dazzling results on this feed. Everything else sounds dulcet good. I give my horse oil and it not only helps him addition weight, but it helps their coat and hooves too. I give my horse Linseed Oil though. It get more, but it has lots of Omega 3s and Omega 6s.
Sometimes the percipience horses have problems putting on force is that they don't absorb the nutrients they need. Putting him on a insert for digestion such as Probios or Smartdigest Ultra could lend a hand him absorb nutrients and fat better. My trainer has seem dazzling results from Succeed, but it is quite costly.
