DeHaan has blocks mark in her sights
11.02.10
By midnight, the Michigan State senior could be relegated to second place again.
It's an odd situation for DeHaan, who sits at 479 and needs just one more block to tie the record set by Sandora Irvin of TCU from 2001-05.
DeHaan is being hotly chased by St. Mary's (Calif.) junior Louella Tomlinson, who owns 478 swats during her first three seasons.
Tomlinson's Gaels tipoff against No. 22 Gonzaga and former MSU player Tiffanie Shives at 10 tonight.
"If I break it," DeHaan said Wednesday, "I'll have a couple hours to myself."
Though she said her parents have been keeping track, the 6-foot-9 DeHaan didn't know how close she was to the record until two weeks ago. She also had no idea she was being so closely pursued by Tomlinson.
"I'll just have to have 10 blocks (against U-M) to keep it out there," DeHaan said with a laugh. "I think it's great. I'm a shot-blocker - that's what I do. To break a record, I want to put it so nobody else can touch it. Obviously, I'm in competition right now with this girl (Tomlinson), but I think I can do it."
