Furnace tune-ups, newer heating systems are ways to 'greener' heat

Do you feel guilty every time you turn up the thermostat to keep warm during the winter, knowing you’re not only using up fossil fuels, but also running up your heating bill?
Don’t worry, be warm — and green.
Keeping warm in an environmentally friendly way runs the gamut from servicing your system to making sure it’s working properly to installing new equipment — possibly adding solar panels, a heat pump or geothermal system.
If your furnace hasn’t been serviced in awhile, or it’s getting older, have it inspected to ensure it is operating safely and at peak efficiency, said Mark Norris, owner of Norris Heating and Cooling in Portage.
Changing furnace filters regularly is one simple maintainence step, he said. One-inch, pleated filters should be changed monthly, he said, while the four-inch higher-efficiency versions can go three to six months between changes.
“A dirty filter causes less air flow. Less air flow means you get less heat out of your furnace,” he said. “Get the filters changed. Get it (the furnace) cleaned up and make sure it’s working like it’s supposed to. It will help to save money the whole season.”
