Scandal-hit Olympus Corp., under fire for window-dressing its accounts, is required to get to the bottom of the allegations, and executives who were involved in the scandal should be subjected to criminal and civil responsibility.
It has come to light that the company's dubious accounting practices, which its former British president had pointed out, were aimed at covering up a huge amount of losses. The accounting irregularities had reportedly continued since the 1990s.
Olympus, which had previously categorically denied any wrongdoing, admitted to the accounting irregularities after former Chairman and President Tsuyoshi Kikukawa told current President Shuichi Takayama on Nov. 7 that the company had covered up its losses.
The scandal involving Olympus dates back to Oct. 14 when the company dismissed Michael Woodford as president less than six months after he assumed the post. At the time, doubts were raised over the company's payment of a massive amount of money to an investment consulting company over its takeover of British medical equipment manufacturer Gyrus Group.
