Future of biodiesel top talk at ag expo
The progression of biodiesel development and its implication on agriculture was the topic of discussion Friday, the final day of the KMOT?Ag Expo.
Hoon Ge of Meg Corp., a Minnesota-based fuel consulting firm, spoke about the history, uses, benefits, and compatibility and policy issues that the biodiesel industry currently faces in the United States.
Of the 85 million barrels of oil consumed globally each day, 19 million barrels are consumed by the U.S. Of that, only 1 percent is biodiesel.
The North Dakota Soybean Council, who sponsored the biodiesel seminar, would like to see that figure increase.
Suzanne Wolf, communications director, said their efforts to market the product as a biofuel source over the last decade has helped to increase availability and use in the state, but more is needed. North Dakota currently does not have any soybean-based biodiesel facilities operating.

WASHINGTON - A bipartisan group of senators has introduced a bill that would sidestep the stalled climate debate on carbon emissions and reduce other harmful gases by large margins in the next few years.
The bill would amend the Clean Air Act of 1990 to require that three pollutants -- sulfur oxide (SO2), nitrogen oxide (NOx) and mercury -- be reduced by substantial amounts through a cap-and-trade system. The bill's co-author, Sen. Thomas Carper, D-Del., said he supports efforts by the administration to reduce carbon emissions related to climate change, but this legislation will improve air quality for Americans' health.
"At the end of the day, while we're trying to pass climate change legislation due to carbon, people are dying," he said. "Kids are going to hospitals. They're missing school."
The bill would reduce SO2 emissions from 7.6 million tons in 2008 to 1.5 million tons by 2018, with checkpoints built in at 2012 and 2015. It would cut NOx emissions from 3 million tons to 1.79 million tons by 2012, and to 1.62 tons in 2015. It would create two regional trading programs for NOx, one in the East and another in the West.
