Though trucks have taken a back seat to cars, all three Detroit automakers still rely on them for their higher profit margins.
Sales of big pickups account for about 30 percent of total truck sales and serve as a bellwether for the recovery of the industry in general, said Rick Spina, GM's global vehicle line executive for full-size trucks.
"They have a good profit margin," he said. "It's a good business to be in."
All three of Detroit's automakers have new vehicles in the segment. The Dodge Ram heavy-duty launched last year and Ford will introduce its new F-Series Super Duty this spring, said Derrick Kuzak, director of global product development.
"Head-to-head competition raises the level of awareness for all of us," said Tony Truelove, Silverado marketing manager.
GM's pickups have a new Duramax 6.6-liter V-8 turbodiesel engine that can run on a blend that is 20 percent biodiesel fuel and 80 percent ultra-low sulfur diesel. Two-thirds of trucks are sold with the diesel engine.
