Milford: Victorian gem has best of old and new

There’s an interesting theory in real estate. Buyers who seek out contemporary architecture are equally drawn to antiques. They’re the house hunters who shy away from standard fare, craving something left of center. Lovers of ultra-modern and yesteryear homes will want to take note of 33 Pleasant St., a pristine Victorian that may tempt diehard colonial fans.
“This property has been renovated from top to bottom,” said Realtor Melissa Pica of Lioce Properties Inc. “It’s just stunning inside and out, the beauty of an antique with completely modern updates.” Situated at the T-intersection of Pleasant Street in Milford, the home boasts a showcase spot, highlighting its grand renovation. Exterior millwork has been wholly restored, including trim work, corbels and decorative moldings surrounding the Victorian home that feature a popular earthy green palette. Built in 1877, the property offers four separate porches, translating into outdoor space for visiting, grilling and even a sunny nook for reading. Part of the antique’s appeal is its paver-clad no-maintenance drive, extending to the rear of the property. Large enough to house several vehicles, it also serves as an upscale surface on which to entertain. There’s a spacious custom shed in the backyard, excellent for storage and handyman projects.

SPARTA -- Karl's Appliance is celebrating 70 years of service this month.
From it's humble beginnings as a small storefront in Belleville to expanding into six different Jersey-based locations, including one in Sparta, Karl's Appliance is one of the oldest and largest private appliance retailers in the state.
Since 1941 when the business was founded, Karl's Appliance has opened stores in Montclair, Sparta, Madison, Orange, Fairfield, and most recently, Paramus. The Karl's Appliance that sat on East Clinton Street in Newton for 30 years was moved to a larger location on Main Street in Sparta in 2008.
Dan Schwartz, owner and chief executive officer, said the first store was opened in Belleville, existing there for 69 years before it was closed and reopened in a new location.
Schwartz took over the family business in 1965 after graduating from George Washington
