Azzurri Review: Italy 3-0 N Ireland
12.10.11
Inspired performances by Andrea Pirlo and Antonio Cassano lead Italy to a memorable 3-0 victory over an ordinary Northern Ireland side in Pescara. Qasa Alom reports
AC Milan’s Antonio Cassano was warned prior to the match that this would be his last chance in the national set-up after offensive comments to a journalist last week – and FantAntonio really didn’t disappoint with a brilliant brace.
However it was his striker partner and this years form player Sebastian Giovinco who started off brightly; full of confidence and enthusiasm, the Parma forward exchanged a sharp one two at the edge of the box before firing off a range finder that didn’t trouble the keeper Maik Taylor too much.
Meanwhile at the other end a long hopeful ball hoofed into the box similar caused chaos in the Italy box but unfortunately for the visitors no player was sharp enough to take advantage. The move was very similar to the shock goal that Ivica Olic scored for Croatia against the Italians in the 2002 World Cup.

Cook to cope with change of seasons
12.10.11
Summer produce is abundant but in this weather I feel like comfort food, even though I know I'll miss tomatoes as soon as they are gone.
Welcome to the crazy season, in a crazy year. Summer seemed to be over in the blink of an eye and winter is snapping at our heels but watermelons are still in the field and some of our red grapes don't even show a blush yet.
One way to deal with it all is to cook, simply cook. When weather foils your plans, lose yourself in the sensual opportunities harvest offers. Over the last few days, I've roasted, peeled and sliced a huge array of peppers, roasted carrots and made applesauce, pesto, Italian-style salsa verde, tomato salsa, avocado salsa and a month's worth of food for Joey, my little longhaired dachshund who is thriving on a raw diet. Dinner tonight will be a tomato pie, made with what will likely be the last tomatoes of the season, though I'm hoping to squeeze out a final tomato polenta tart, too.
Later today, I'll gather apples from the orchard to make another, bigger batch of applesauce.
