State Fair exhibit showcases green ideas for home of today

' ' & -->

DALLAS -- The irony about the Home of Tomorrow at the State Fair of Texas is that everything there is available today. Most of us just don't know it. "It's not futuristic, Jetson-type stuff," said Joe Harberg, former owner of Current Energy in Dallas, who is sponsoring the three-house exhibit. More than 80 area company sponsors collaborated on building the exhibit, which includes an 8-by-20-foot micro-house, a three-room tent featuring green designer touches, and an open patio with a pizza oven and "solar tree" of energy-producing panels. But the centerpiece of the exhibit is the Net-Zero Energy Home, a 1,600-square-foot house built by Scarlett Custom Homes of Frisco that produces its own electricity and sells excess electricity back to a power company. It does this using a solar tree, geothermal heating and air conditioning, a solar-powered water heater, along with insulation, LED lights, triple-pane windows and other strategies to reduce energy consumption. There's something for everyone at this exhibit, from attic foam to a robotic lawn mower. And be sure to check out recycled materials, like marble countertops, that provide savings on cost and help for the environment. Here are some of the most interesting products that you may not know are available.

1 pound mixed berries, such as blueberries, raspberries or strawberries Elderflower cordial (optional) 1/2 lemon 2 sprigs of fresh mint A few Scottish shortbread biscuits, to serve 2/3 cup heavy cream 1 heaped tablespoon confectioners¡¦ sugar 1 tablespoon vanilla paste or extract 1. To start: Get all your ingredients and equipment ready. Set the oven to 400 degrees. Fill and boil the kettle. Put a large, wide frying pan on medium heat and a large saucepan with a lid on low heat. Put the thick slicer disc attachment into the food processor. 2. Chicken pie: Put the chicken breasts on a plastic board and slice into ƒ¦1/2-inch strips. Put a lug of olive oil and a pat of butter into the hot large, wide pan. Add the chicken and cook for 3 minutes or so. Meanwhile, quickly trim the scallions and wash the mushrooms, then slice together in the food processor. Add to the pan with flour and stir. Add mustard, creme fraiche and chicken broth and stir well. Pick the thyme leaves and stir into the pan with a few fine gratings of nutmeg and a good pinch of salt and pepper. Leave to simmer. 3. Smash: Trim the carrots, then quickly slice in the food processor. Add to the saucepan with a lug of extra-virgin olive oil, a good pinch of salt and pepper, and a few thyme tips. Just cover with boiled water, then cover with a lid and turn the heat to high. Cook for 15 minutes, or until tender. 4. Chicken pie: Lightly dust a clean surface with flour and unroll the sheet of puff pastry. Use a small knife to lightly crisscross and score it. Take the pan of chicken off the heat. Tip the filling into an ovenproof baking dish slightly smaller than the sheet of pastry (approximately 9 by 13 inches). Cover the filling with the pastry sheet, tucking it in at the edges. Quickly beat the egg, then brush it over the top of the pie. Put into the oven and cook on the top shelf for around 15 minutes, or until golden and gorgeous. Fill and reboil the kettle. 5. Peas: Return the empty chicken pan to high heat. Quickly wash the lettuce then slice it in the food processor. Add butter and flour to the pan, then pour in chicken broth, tear in the mint leaves, and use a balloon whisk to mix to a smooth and bubbling sauce. Add the peas and sliced lettuce. Squeeze over the juice of 1/2 lemon, pour in a splash of boiled water, season with salt and pepper, stir, then put the lid on. 6. Berries and cream: Slice any larger strawberries, if using, then put all the fruit into a large serving dish. Add a little slug of elderflower cordial, if using, and squeeze over the juice of 1/2 lemon. Mix to coat all the fruit, then pick the mint leaves and tear over. Take to the table with the cookies. Using an electric whisk, mix the heavy cream with the confectioners¡¦ sugar and vanilla paste or extract until thick. Put next to the berries on the table. 7. Smash: Check that the carrots are cooked through, then drain and return to the pan. Taste, correct the seasoning, and leave as they are or smash up. Take to the table. To serve: Take the peas to the table, then get the pie out of the oven and tuck in! When my before-mentioned Sharp convection microwave absolutely released from working I wanted to take over from it with the same aspect. My old component had a phase of assembly on it... June 1988. This upshot is well-grounded like my old one except it is lose higher wattage. And, amazingly, this one was lose less precious than the one I bought more than 20 years ago. I never would have replaced my old section straight to get a more brand-new look, but that is another extras. The old one was atrocious with a phony wood look. I sweet the look of my new all white maquette!

The Sharp R-930AK 1-1/2-Cubic-Foot 900-Watt Convection Microwave, Unscrupulous is the maximum effort convection microwave oven on the hawk. I had been using my prior to VERY alike resemble pattern for about 15 years unimaginative for all of my significant cooking. It did baking, roasting, and broiling excellently. I did roasting chickens up to 7.5 pounds and turkeys up to 15 pounds, steaks, beef roasts, hamburgers, pork, fish, cassaroles, everything. It was my line customary cooking utensil. That is why, when it came epoch to make good on the old one, I bought another Sharp miniature that is almost duplicate to the old one I had. It is the most sound cooking appliance I have ever acclimatized. Althought I have a stodgy oven, I just use it. I use the Sharp R-930AK 1-1/2-Cubic-Foot 900-Watt Convection Microwave as opposed to. It also saves me a do a moonlight flit on energy over my common moving stove and oven.

I was so thrilled with this convection microwave that this is my minute one. The last one was purchased 10 years ago. I needed another oven during the holidays and I can only have one oven and a microwave or a coupled oven and no microwave so I opted for this convection microwave. It works elevated. I can use it as an oven when needed and also as a microwave. It is big enough...
